New Canton Restaurant Celebrates Year of the Ox

New Canton Restaurant observed Chinese New Year and celebrated a complete remodel and renovation of the restaurant on January 25th, 2008.  New Canton originally opened in 1964,  Owner Jacky Chan purchased his establishment in 1989 from an uncle who lived in the same Chinese village where his mother lived. Jacky continues to keep the 45 year old restaurant a family tradition in Uptown Whittier.

A Whittier Tradition is Brought Up to Date

The traditional red doors that welcome New Canton's guests have long been a well known icon in Whittier. Jacky attempted to paint the door black during the remodel, but local residents made it known that, to them, the nickname of his establishment was the “Red Door Restaurant.” The red door compliments the buildings new front of flagstone, red awnings and large crown molding atop a soft yellow-colored stucco finish.  A New Canton sign with the words Chinese Cuisine in neon and exterior lighting finish the exterior design on a grand scale.

The interior design is an architectural sensation, with dynamic skylights that simulate the natural light of dusk, throughout the day. Fine Chinese statues, vases, and paintings adorn the walls in the new dining rooms and the upscale bar and lounge. The new colors and lighting are contemporary and lively; every detail in the new design is impeccable throughout the interior.

Private Celebration with Family and Friends

The private celebration was attended by family from Canada, San Diego, Mexico, Las Vegas, and Hong Kong.  Close friends and long time customers attended, including Whittier’s Mayor, Joe Venatari. Also in attendance were neighboring restaurateurs, Achille and Francesco Dattilo, of Dattilo Italian Restaurant. Mrs. Dattilo celebrated her birthday as New Canton rang in the Chinese New Year.

An Elaborate Chinese Buffet

In the kitchen, the chefs cooked, chopped, and stir fried, creating New Canton's finest Chinese cuisine while the guests sipped on green tea martinis and other cocktails in the chic bar and lounge. Meanwhile an array of Chinese dishes evolved into a grand buffet fit for a king.

Uptown Whittier is only Getting Better

This is just one of many new and exciting improvements that are happening in Uptown Whittier.  Jacky Chan is to be congratulated for his effort to bring you an upscale dining experience, and we are happy to mention that is just one more good reason to Shop Whittier.
